The Gallery House
The project
Every main room in this house was planned as a backdrop for large artwork, so the architecture stays quiet: pale oak floors, plain walls and furniture chosen as sculpture. Travertine is used where the eye should stop, a lit shelving wall in the living room and a powder room finished with round brass wall lights. The stair is cantilevered off the wall with light running beneath each tread. Upstairs the dressing room is a run of bronze-framed glass wardrobes, and the main bathroom puts a black freestanding bath against a window onto the garden.

Finishes are selected in the studio from physical samples: stone slabs, timber and terrazzo trays, and yarn and colour boards for rugs, laid out against the drawings before anything is ordered.
